After hearing some abnormal sounds in Xey's heartbeat during his 3 year check-up, Dr. Brook sent us to Pediatric Cardiology for an echocardiogram. As always, I prepared Xavier for what to expect - I told him they would put some gel on his chest and use a special camera to take some pictures of his heart. And, as always, Xavier did great. He is such a big boy and he always makes Curtis and I so proud.
Nurse Nicky gave Xavier a toy to play with . . . a very loud, repetitive toy, which, of course, he LOVED! He banged on that thing the whole time making all kinds of noise!

Xey played with his Daddy's hospital ID card for a little bit too. Curtis had to walk over from work at Richland to be there with us.
This is a picture of Xey's little heart . . . it's so weird to see and hear . . . at least for people like me, who don't see this stuff everyday!
As it turns out, Xey has a PFO, or Patent Foramen Ovale. It is a hole in between the top two chambers of Xavier's heart. It has a little flap over it and develops normally in a fetus. It is supposed to close within the first 1 or 2 years of life, but Xavier's has not yet closed. The hole is very small, and according to the cardiologist, is allowing only a very small amount of blood to get through to the other chambers. Xavier will have to have another echo in 3 years to see if the hole has closed completely, and if not, we may have to consult further with the cardiologist at that time.
We are grateful that the hole is so small and that it will most likely not affect Xavier. For more information on PFO, see this link.
